Athlete. A World class bicycle racer, he won the Tour de France twice, placing first in 1983 and 1984. He came in second in the 1989 Tour de France, losing to American cyclist Greg LeMond by only eight seconds, the smallest margin in the history of the race. As a professional cyclist (1982 to 1993) he achieved 76 victories in his career, winning the Milan-Sanremo twice and the Giro d'Italia in 1989. He is also a member of the Cycling Hall of Fame. Prior to his death from cancer, he was commentator with France's television channel A2 and was present at the Tour de France in 2010 despite his illness.
