In 1868 Nels married Anne Marie Johansen in Odense County and in the Spring 1871 they got a son (Jens Johan Petersen). Something in the marridge went wrong and Nels immigrated to US. He was on board the ship "City of Antwerp" from Inman Line, arriving New York July the 31th, 1871. Nels was a farmer. When he left Denmark he was married, but his wife and son stayed in Denmark. Nels never contacted his family again and he never formally divorced his wife, probably therefore he did not marry again in US.
In 1874 (3 year after his immigration to US) his wife back in Denmark got a speciel permission from Church Ministry to marry again.
In US Nels worked as a farmer and came via Momence, Kankakee County, Illinois (Census 1880) to Mt. Jewett, McKean County, PA around 1890. He stayed there the rest of his life as owner of a small farm (according to census 1900 and 1910). Nels died in 1918 and was buried at Nebo Cementary. At that time he had 7 grandchildren in Denmark - but that he never knew.
Thanks to Ron Reid and Jeff & Annie, Nels´ family now have a photo of his headstone at Nebo Cementary. For the first time (after 93 years) there will be familyflower on his graveyard. RIP
