Hattie was the daughter of George and Harriet Coutu Lardie, born in Milton, Ontario where her father ran a general store. Harriet was the eldest of 13 children. The family immigrated to the United States in 1859 when Harriet was 8 years old. She married James Swaney on 2 July 1871 in Grand Traverse County, and they had seven children. Harriet died from pneumonia at the age of 77.
