Robert Stevenson appears to have immigrated to New York from Northern Ireland with his parents about 1834. He was a painter in Albany, regularly advertising in the city directories and building a substantial reputation from about 1835 to 1880. His home at 21 Clinton St, very close to the First (Dutch Reformed) Church in Albany which is still standing, was located on the site of today's Palace Theater.
Robert and his wife Ellen (Ervin or possibly Irvine, also from Northern Ireland) had six children between 1844 and 1858 but only one - Charles Ervin Stevenson - survived childhood.
