In his fathers will, Elias is named as "second son" and given "all my lands which lie between the North road and he South road whereon I now live, with all the buildings. Also the Fresh meadows which lyeth upon the south side of Peconick River and joining the said river." Elias was a shipbuilder the greater part of his life. He was also the owner and captain of a merchant vessel which sailed between New York and the West Indies.

The name of his ship was the Polly. As Captain he faught pirates, against the british ships in the revolutionary war, and helped refugees to escape Long Island into Connecticut at the start of the revolutionary war.
