As written by son-in-law, Robert Hufford:

Broome County, New York Legend. My dear Leila's Dad. Raised in Anamosa, Iowa Larry gave his life to Christ at an early age. He served in the United States Army during the mid-1950s and later returned to Iowa where he met the love of his life, Carol, in the mid-1960s, with marriage following on September 15, 1967. The couple relocated to Binghamton, New York where where they were active in Christian work, singing in the choir, and transporting numerous young people to Church so that they would have an opportunity to hear the Gospel. While raising Carol's three children as his own, Larry spent several years as a New York Life agent prior to his entry into politics. Over his public career, he was to be Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Binghamton, the Town of Union, and the Town of Binghamton, while serving as a Broome County Legislator in the early 1990s. For 11 years he was Chairman of the Celebrity Waiter's Luncheon for the American Lung Association and in his final decade was a Broome County Peace Officer. While maintaining a full commitment to his Lord, his family, and the community, Larry found time to play Church softball well into his 50s, to be a fisherman of high skill and enthusiasm, and to follow his beloved Cubs and Bears. Perhaps his main regret was that he never got to see the Cubs capture a World Series, though he certainly got to enjoy the Bears' 1986 Super Bowl win. He died after an eight year battle with renal carcinoma during which he remained active with work and at Central Baptist Church most of the time, while showing all with whom he came in contact the real meaning of Grace.
