Israel Shepard (Benjamin2,Benjamin1) was born to Benjamin Shepard and Ruth Mosher on March 7, 1807 in (most likely) Broadalbin NY.

In the 1850 Census, he was with wife Nancy, Hannah, Mary, and Israel, Philinda, Lucinda and Benjamin in Scipio, Seneca, OH. He is listed as a "teamster" ( A horse team driver or stableman. )

In the 1870 Census, he is called "Ira", living in Camden with wife Nancy, Charles, and "Emma" (Eva).

In the 1880 census, it states that (Hannah's father) Israel was born in Vermont. He married Nancy Brown of Canada June 14, 1833 in New York. Israel died Feb. 27, 1873 and is buried in Berg Cemetery, Montgomery, Hillsdale County, MI.

Israel's father died when he was six years of age. His mother remarried.

Israel was a farmer by occupation, and about 1844 removed from the Empire State to Bloomfield, Seneca County, Ohio, and from there, to Lenawee County in Michigan in the spring of 1859, and in 1861, to Hillsdale County, Michigan where he operated rented land a few years, and then purchased a farm. Mr. and Mrs. Shepard were the parents of ten children, three sons and seven daughters.

Mr. Shepard held the office of City Marshal in New York State for a number of years. He became connected with the State Militia, and was promoted from time to time until he was finally made a Colonel, and evinced peculiar talent in military tactics.

Mr. Shepard had accumulated some property, having purchased late in life the land upon which the present town of Montgomery stands, and which he named after the county of which he had been a resident in New York State. (The book the History of Hillsdale County states that Montgomery was named after a Mr. Montgomery, who named it after himself as he was the first to file a name.)

Israel and his wife spent their last years in Hillsdale County. He and his wife died within a few weeks of each other, the former Feb. 27, 1873, and Nancy on the 2d of March following, the latter of spinal meningitis. They are buried with their daughter Melissa.

History of Montgomery

Previous to 1869 the site of the present village of Montgomery was as wild and uncultivated a piece of land as the township contained. It was then an “oak opening”, and was rather looked upon as almost worthless land compared to the rest of the township, but the Fort Wayne. Jackson and Saginaw Railroad stretching through the town, and people began to look about them to select a better point for a station that would accommodate the farmers of the section. A t last the place selected, and immediately the spirit of enterprise developed itself in the people of that time and made itself manifest.

History of Montgomery:

Tracts’ of land owned by Israel Shepard, G. B. Hewlett, R.B. Teachout and Joshua Dobbs, aggregating more than 80 acre were surveyed into village plats and thrown open for sale. These lots were quickly sold to a large number of mechanics, laborers and business men, and they erected houses, shops and stores upon them and a thrifty village sprang up as if by a miracle.
