Hamilton went to England in October 1943. His first plane, "Patsy" — named for his wife, the former Pat Jones of Rocky Mount — was "shot from under him." Hamilton had accumulated the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters when his last plane, "Mrs Ham," did not return from a mission over France on July 14, 1944. Hamilton as declared in February 1945 to have been killed in action on that date.
