He was serving as the platoon sergeant combat engineer in A Co of the 40th Engineer Regt attached to First Airborne Force. He was killed while trying to recover the bodies of two French sisters and their 14 year old nephew who had been killed by mines near a 12 ft deep mined crater that the Germans had blown to slow the Allies. He and another soldier, PFC Louis Green, were killed when a body they were attempting to remove by rope from the crater set off four Teller mines. PFC Green is also buried in the Rhone American Cemetery.
