Killed in action early in the morning during the attack on Hamel on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. At first he was reported as missing and it was almost a year later that his family was notified of his death.
Part of George's obit states:
RIFLEMAN GEORGE COCHRANE:
Eldest and dearly loved son of Charles and Maria Cochrane. Killed in action 1st July 1916 at age 19 years.
Remember him now upward waiting
Past the links of earth's dull chain
Gone to Heaven, where he will never
Pain or sorrow feel again.
"Faithful until death"
Inserted by his sorrowing father mother brothers and sisters.
He is commemerated on Dunluch Presbyterian Church and also on the Bushmills War Memorial.
