2d Lieutenant Smith was a hero who plummeted to his death in a fighter plane that was bomb-laden and falling to the Earth. He stayed in the plane to avert massive loss of life to the villagers below and in doing so caused his own demise. Grateful villagers took his corpse to the town hall where it was revered and honored noting, "In this town he will always be remembered as the American Pilot who gave his life so that we may live."

Potomac State Pasquino - February 7, 1945, p. 1 & 4
