John served as a Staff Sergeant & Radio Operator on B-24 "Stubby Gal II" (#42-94933), 846th Bomber Squadron, 489th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

John was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was hit by German flak and eventually crash landed in Northern France during the war. John died prior to the crash landing when a shell hit the and was awarded a Purple Heart.

John was the only crew member that lost his life on this mission.
