He was killed in the German offensive known as Operation North Wind which was launched on 1 Jan 1944 with the objective of taking Strasbourg. The battle occurred in the village of Herrlisheim in the north Alsace region. The Germans had established a bridgehead and the 12th Armored Division attempted to clear it. In bitter fighting against the 10th SS Panzer Division two battalions of US infantry were wiped out and the division suffered 1700 casualties total before they ultimately cleared the bridgehead
