He had sent a sister a commendation given him by his commander. It lauded the division's participation in two major operations between Dec. 17 and Jan. 25. According to the citation the division earned a record of 2,095 German soldiers killed, 1,984 wounded and 1,188 captured in the five weeks period.
He received training at Camp Carson, Col.; Camp Robinson, Ark., and Louisiana before he was shipped overseas.
His last letter was written April 1 at which time he said he was billeted in a German village for Easter.
