Staff Sergeant Charles R Wilson, Ohio, Service Number 35277119, flew as a waist gunner on B-17s for the 423rd Bomb Squadron, 306th Bomb Group. He was on killed 9 Nov 1942 during a mission to St. Nazaire, France, in B-17 #41-24509, 'Miss Swoose'. His aircraft was heavily damaged by flak between the Initial Point (IP) and the target causing a fire on #3 engine forcing the crew salvo their bombload and bail out. The bomber crashed into the North Sea. Six crewmen, including Wilson, did not survive.
