Bennett was the son of Solomon and Sarah Goodson. He was married to Sarah "Sally" Armentrout on 2 Mar 1867 in Jay county, Indiana.

Bennett was a private in the Civil War, enlisting in Company B of the Indiana 34th Infantry on 1 Feb 1862. He received a disability discharge on 30 Jan 1864. A federal military headstone was provided on contract dated June 21, 1883.
