General: OCCUPATION: Farming
In 1920 Granville appears to be a farm laborer rather than an owner. He is working for wages even though he is past 70 years. Neither he nor Lucy could read or write.
In 1880s he lived in Paulding County, OH. In 1900 he is in Lincoln County, KY. Has a grand son James Foster (could this be Forester?) living with him. In both 1910 and 1920 he lived in Garrard County, KY.
Granville was a Civil War veteran serving in Company F of the 49th Kentucky Infantry. He enrolled at Camp Nelson on 22 July 1863 and was discharged 26 Dec 1864 at Lexington, KY. He served as a private.

From the Historical Atlas of Paulding County, Ohio

p. 44
Granville Sayler is a man of much prominence and influence in the community in which he resides. He was born in Harlan county, Ky., September 14, 1845, the son of John G. and Polly (Hall) Sayler, of English parentage. Mr. Sayler was reared to manhood in his native county,
and during the war was a soldier. He enlisted, in 1863, in company F, Forty-ninth Kentucky regiment, and participated in the battles of Franklin. Nashville and Memphis, He was discharged December 26, 1864, at
Lexington, Ky. Returning home he married Miss Louise Farmer on the 18th of October, 1865. Mrs. Sayler is the daughter of James and Susan (Skidmore ) Farmer, and a lady widely and favorably known in the community. By her marriage she became the mother of Angeline, the wife
of Milton Belcher; Albert, Sarah (deceased), Ritta, John, Susan, Polly, James, Laura and Joseph. Mr. Sayler acted as sheriff of Harlan county Ky., for two years and was justice of the peace for six years. He located in Paulding county in 1890, and has since been engaged in farming. Politically he is a republican and a pensioner.

His pension papers indicate that he was in poor health by 1920 but had suffer from rheumatism since 1890. He was blind in left eye (lost eye in 1919 - injured during Civil War) and partially blind in right; deaf in left ear and partially deaf in right. The maiden name of his third wife Lucy Helton taken from his Pension Application papers. These papers also confirm his divorce from his first and second wives.
The following material taken from Nancy Creech's manuscript indicates that Granville could be hot tempered:
Granville was back in Lincoln Co., KY, when he married 2nd 15 Aug 1904 in Lincoln County to Ida Stevens/Baker. Ida was much younger then Granville, she as only age 21. It is unknown if Granville and Ida had children. The following article was located by Gail Robbin Brown Pridemore, at Lexington, KY: The Stanford Interior Journal dated Tuesday, 02 May 1905:

Ten weeks have elapsed since the effort was made to burn the home of John Stevens in the East End and no arrest has yet been made. A writ was issued for Granville Saylor, but Constable Johnson has never been able to serve it. Saylor is the husband of Steven's sister, who was in the house with her two children when fire was set to it. It seems that Saylor and his wife had had a misunderstanding and she had gone to her brothers house for protection. During Sunday night before last, rags saturated with oil were placed around the door and set on fire. The occupants of the house were awakened by the blaze and when they went to the only window in the house to get out they found that a prop had been placed against it. Stevens then rushed through the door and was trying to extinguish the flames when a load of shot struck him in the face putting out one of his eyes. Mrs. Saylor and her two children and Steven all managed to get out of the house and the building was finally saved. In the yard they found a coal oil can which we understand Mrs. Saylor claims belonged to her husband. and some rags and paper which she is satisfied came from his house. It was a dastardly attempt to cremate the whole family and if Saylor is guilty, hanging is to good for him. He should be arrested at all hazards and made to prove his innocence, if he is not guilty.
