Mary entered the Cabragh (Dublin) on October 30, 1871. She professed her vows in New Orleans, LA on May 4, 1873. She wrote music and sang. In 1920 she was a teacher in the convent. According to the

Sister Mary Philomene Close (nee Mary) was baptized in 1850 in Dublin (year and place of birth likely the same), entered the convent Oct., 30, 1871 probably Cabra (Dublin), and professed her vows May 4, 1873 in New Orleans. She was the 21st cloistered nun to come after the seven founders who came in 1860, and only the 17th to come from Ireland after the founders. So you could say she was a pioneer in the St. Mary's community.

She had an illustrious (for a cloistered nun) career in music, having published considerable amount of sheet music, first anonymously as "A Dominican Sister" and later under the pseudonym "Vina Schofar". The Convent has a collection of her music. She seems to have acquired senile dementia before her death Feb 3, 1930 (Age 80), which took place at a nearby sanitarium, attended by the Daughters of Charity. She had served as a Councilor to the Prioress, and so was a community leader in an advisory capacity.

Her parents were George A. & Elizabeth Close of Dublin City, Dublin Co., Ireland

Siblings were John Francis Close (Ireland), George H. Close (Connecticut) & William Victor Close (Texas)
