Alexander enlisted with Company H of the 53rd Regiment of Virginia Infantry on 26 July 1861 at West Point. He was detailed to work in the Officer's Quarters in 1862. He fell ill and was sent home to recuperate. His illness persisted after his return and he spent much of 1864 in several hospitals around Richmond suffering from chronic diarrhea. He apparently was captured as his parole lists him as a prisoner of war. It was administered at Manchester on 4 May 1865.

Robert Lee Snow kindly adds;

Alexander Davis, 1832. In King William in 1850 and 1860 with widowed mother Catherine(1798 average). Enlisted 7/26/61 at West Point. In Mangohick in 1870 with mother. Wife to be Sarah Elizabeth "Beth" Blake is living with her mother Mildred Blake in the same area in 1870. Alexander married Sarah Elizabeth Blake(1844-1921) about 1870.
