Born in Weingarten, Germany, he arrived in the USA between 1834 and 1844. His occupation was musician. In 1844, at age 13, he joined the army at West Point with his father's permission to learn music. The surname was misspelled as "Karchia" in some military records. He served 5 yrs.(during the Mexican War). In 1853 he wed Katharina Kronenbach and was the father of 6 children. He joined the army again during the Civil War. He died alone at 49 Bogart St., Brooklyn. New York.
