Teodor Kostyszyn was born in Postolowka, Ternopil, Ukraine, when it was part of Galicia, under Austrian rule. He and his brothers and sisters immigrated here to escape WWI. He married Tekla Kalwarowska and raised four daughters: Ann, Mary, Sophie Jane and Julia.

He was a collar maker, in Rochester, then worked in the Fulton papermill until he bought a farm near Clines Corners. They moved back to the city where he eventually died of pancreatic cancer.

Feodor, who became Theodor when he got to the US, went by Fred, but his WWI US draft card reads Frank. Tekla decided to Americanize the name on the stone so she changed the z to an h.
