MABLE SASSER CANADY SMITH


NAKINA -- Mable Canady Smith, 86, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter in Whiteville. She was born Nov. 13, 1923 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Cort Sasser and Odessa Watts Sasser. She was the widow of George Canady and Calvin Smith.

Smith co-owned and operated Columbus County Medac-EMS in Whiteville and was a member of Nakina Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Nakina Baptist Church with Revs. Corbin Cooper, Slade Skipper and Dr. Ray Thigpen officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be employees of Columbus County Medac-EMS. Burial will follow in Peacock's Columbus Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 2 at Peacock Funeral Home in Whiteville.

She is survived by a son, Larry Canady of Nakina; two brothers, Hubert Sasser and wife, Alease, and Ralph Sasser and wife, Lou, all of Nakina; a sister, Billie Carter and husband, Frank, of Wilmington; five grandchildren, Wayne, Bonté and Tammie Canady, Ralph Canady, and Charlene Bullard; and two great-grandchildren, Kelton and Lila Bullard. She was preceded in death by two sons, Charles and William Canady and a daughter, Raye Canady.
