Chester was a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, National Association of Retail Druggists, Indiana Pharmacists Association, National Community Pharmacy Association and was a 30 year member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. He was a past president of the Kiwanis, a member of the Exchange club and newsletter editor, co-founder and "Head Hog" of the Groundhog Club as well as a co-founder of C.A.R.E. (Central Alexandria Revitalization Effort). Chester also sponsored and worked on many C.A.R.E. Days and cleanup projects. He attended Madison Park Church of God and had previously been active in the Alexandria First United Methodist Church. Chester served as treasurer of the Boy Scouts and on the Eagle Scout Board of review.
Chester's love of the arts was reflected in his participation in the Alexandria Community Theater musicals including: My Fair Lady, 1776, and The Man Who Came to Dinner. He also served the city of Alexandria as councilman from 1983-1987. In addition to coin and stamp collecting Chester was an avid reader; he was a Bible scholar and enjoyed the works of James Whitcomb Riley, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and books about World War II. He knew and enjoyed every movie made by Alfred Hitchcock. His musical tastes ran the gamut from NPR's Morning Musicale classical to Bluegrass the Kingston trio and Gospel.
He is survived by his wife whom he married April 14, 1984; four children, a sister, his mother-in-law, an uncle, a brother in law, three grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents, father in law Dr. A.R. Lower, brother Conrad Watkins, sisters Peggy Lutes and Sarah O'Neil and grandson Elliot M. Long
A celebration of life service will be held at 5 P.M. Sunday, March 28th at Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 S. Park Avenue, Alexandria, IN 46001 with Pastor Mike Schwartz of Madison Park Church of God officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 P.M. Sunday March, 28th at the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alexandria Revitalization Commission, 125 N. Wayne St. Alexandria, IN 46001, or the American Diabetes Association. Thankyou fo honoring Chester by helping others.
