Hans Dietrich Ehlers was a son of Claus Hinrich Friedrich and Maria Margaretha (Pruss) Ehlers who was born in Langenhagen, Schonwalde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His siblings included: Hinrich, Johann Hinrich Friederich, Dorothea Sophia Johanna, Hans Friedrich, Maria Friederike Henriette, Margaretha Henrietta, Charlotte Catharina Margaretha, and Hans Carl Ehlers. Hans Dietrich Ehlers married Christina Margrette Hagedorn in 1861. In 1865, they moved to Clinton County, Iowa, and then later moved to Crawford County, Iowa. Hans Dietrich and Christina had twelve children: John, Fritz, Henry, Richard, Rose, Emma, Bertha, Charles, William, Louis, Ed, and Emil Cleveland Ehlers.
