William was the first child born to Irena and Thomas James; He was named after his 2nd. Great-Grandfather William James one of the pioneers of Amelia County.
By 1950 the family settled in Chesterfield Co. where he married Pocahontas Stewart, Sept. 2, 1855.
In 1860 they had 2 son's and living in the Ettrick Factory, Southern District.
By 1870 they had 6 children and living in Manchester, William was a machinist for the Richmond & Danville R.R. In 1874 William & Pocahontas had a set of twins born to them with only one to survive, Mary Elizabeth. Pocahontas died 4 years later in May 1878. William then married Miss Martha Elmira Chappell, Dec. 17, 1879, Petersburg City. By 1880 William was working as a Locomotive Engineer for eastern division of the Norfolk and Western Railroad. They had a son William Luther in 1884.
The R.&D. R.R. was a vital link between Richmond and Danville during the American Civil War.
The R&D R.R. later became the Southern Railway.

William is buried next to Pocahontas along with some of their young children in Ettrick cemetery, The headstone he had done for her, you can see how much he loved her, upon his death you can see how much Martha loved him.
