M. Grabenstein Dies Suddenly At Tupper Lake
Winthrop - Relatives received word Saturday afternoon of the death of Max Grabensfein, 84, a resident of Tupper Lake for many years, who passed away early at 12:30 Friday morninp at his home in that village.
He died suddenly although he had been ill for several years, suffering from a heart ailment, and had had a heart a ttack earlier Thursday evening.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Sunday morning at Beth Joseph Synagogue, Tupper Lake. Burial wax made in the parish cemetery.
Mt. Morris Chapter 301, O. E. S., conducted the Eastern Star ritual service at the Richer Funeral home at 8 o'clock Saturday evening.
Mr. Grabeustein was born in New York City, Apr. 18, 1885, a son of Edward and Bertha Block Graibenstein, and came to Tupper Lake 35 years ago and was active in tailoring and dry cleaning business until ill health forced him to retire in 1942.
A 32nd degree Mason, he was a past master of Mt. Arab Lodge 847 F. & A. M., and a member of Ziyara Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., of Utica.
Mr. Grabenstein was also a past patron of Mt. Morris Chapter 361 O. E. S. and a district officer of the Order of Eastern Star, Franklin district.
He was much interested in civic progress and helped pioneer Boy Scout work in the Tupper section during the earlier years of the Adirondack Council. He ailso worked for the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children and was an active member of the Saranac Lake Arts and Crafts Guild.
In 1919, he married Misrt Grace M. Bacon in Brasher Falls, a daughter of the late Charles and Jane Shampine Bacon, a member of the Class of 1911 of Brasher and, Stockholm High School and a graduate of Potsdam State Normal School in 1913. She has taught since that time In Tupper Lake.
Surviving besides his wife are three half brothers, Leo, Edward, and Alfred Gray, all of New York City. A sister-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Bacon Clough, passed away in Brasher Falls in January 1941.
