Born Joan Goss to Robert J. and Mary Grace (Little) Goss.

Joan entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1955, from Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Parish, Altoona.

She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Seton Hill College and a Master's Degree in Education, with a concentration in Theology, from Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH.

Sister taught in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh, and Altoona-Johnstown, PA; Phoenix, AZ; and in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.
Missions included Holy Rosary, Juniata, PA; 13 years at St. Anselm, Swissvale (Pittsburgh area); and Bethesda, MD.

She taught for 2 years at Elizabeth Seton High School in the Brookline section of Pittsburgh, then was a charter faculty member of Seton La Salle High School, a 1979 merger of the girls' Elizabeth Seton High School and boys' South Catholic High School. She taught religion there for 27 years, until April 2006, when her struggle with cancer compelled her resignation.

In 1998, she received the Golden Apple Award which recognizes outstanding performance in Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Students' comments included, "Sister was the first teacher who made math understandable," and "She made me love religion."

Sr. Mary Ildefonse Goss, SC, a Sister of Charity for 51 years, passed away at the motherhouse, Caritas Christi.

She was predeceased by her parents and her aunt: Sr. Mary Angelica Little, SC (Memorial #49994142)

Surviving siblings:
Thomas R. (Gina), Barbara (Eugene E.) Stoltz, Judith (Richard T.) Baker, and Patricia Goss.

Visitation at Caritas Christi motherhouse. Funeral in the Chapel of the Assumption, Caritas Christi, Monday, May 1.
