Subject of the popular song by Ethna Carbery. A presbyterian, he was a member of the group United Irishmen. He was the leader of a squadron in the town of Toomebridge, County Antrim. For his part in the 1798 uprising, he was executed by the British. He was hanged at the bridge and his body was dismembered and buried under the road, where the traffic from Antrim to Derry passed over it daily. In 1852, when a new bridge was being constructed, his nephew, Hugh McCorley, who was a foreman in charge of the construction, made plans to recover and re-inter his body. With the help of a group of friends and relatives, this took place on June 29, 1852. McCorley's body was re-interred at the Duneane Churchyard in an unmarked grave.
