Dimitrios "Dimmy" Gavriel was born July 31, 1975 and was the son of Penelope and Chris Gavriel. He was working as a Wall Street analyst at the time of the September 11th attacks. Four of his friends, two of them former Brown fraternity brothers, were killed in the attack, after which he gave up his career and enlisted in the military. He joined the Marines in October 2003. On November 19, 2004 he was killed during intense fighting in Fallujah. He had been wounded two weeks previously and was in line for the purple heart, but he had rejoined his unit and accompanied them on what became his final mission.

He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on December 2, 2004. He was awarded two purple hearts by President George W. Bush.
