He was born the son of Cosmas Tambakis and Stavroula (Cavacos) in Niles, Ohio and was later raised by his stepfather, Nick Polas, following the death of Charles' father Cosmas prior to his birth.
Chuck was a retired Staff Sergeant having served with honor and distinction in the U.S. Army, receiving several commendations, as a Military Policeman for nearly 21 years in WWII, Korea and several other overseas theaters.
He married (in 1960) and is survived by his wife, Mary (Halvis), formerly of Warren, Ohio; three children, Marion Roosen of Hanau, Germany and her husband, Reiner Roosen, Nicholas Charles Tambakis and his wife, Cornelia Pappas, of Annapolis, MD and Photini Stella Rice (Tambakis) and her husband, Michael Rice, of Tucson; four grandchildren, Ronny Roosen and his wife, Nadine, Andreas Rice, Aristomenes Tambakis and Demetrios Tambakis; several nieces and nephews, several great and great-great-nieces and nephews and Godchildren.
Evidence of how much Chuck is loved has been displayed by the outpouring of support and generosity from friends and neighbors.
The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Tucson at 9:00 a.m. There will be a Viewing from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 during which a Trisagion Prayer Service will begin at 7:30 p.m. at ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. Tucson Boulevard, Tucson, AZ, 85716.
The Military burial follows at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista, AZ.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the building fund at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Tucson, or to the Philoptchos. Arrangements entrusted to ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 520-327-6341.
