Another of the old landmarks gone to rest.
Mrs. Mary Nichols, daughter of Deacon James S. and Abigail Miller, was born at Smithtown, Suffolk County, Long Island, N.Y., Sept. 27,
1804. Was twice married, first to Jonas M. Payne about 1825 by which union there were three children--two sons and one daughter--all of which are dead and two of them are buried in the same cemetery; second marriage to Samuel M. Nichols occured in the year 1835 at Smithtown, L.I. They immigrated to Illinois and settled June 6, 1837, on the same quarter section on which she died last Friday, Oct. 10, 1890, at the age of 86 years and 14 days. Of the second marriage there were four children--three sons and one daugher-- all living: Jeramiah, who now resides at Concord, Neb.; Vincent T. present residence in Texas; Cornelius, of Essex, Ia., Priscilla O. Fassett, of Andover. The deceased united with the Presbyterian church at Andover in 1844. She has been in feeble health for a number of years, but kindly loved and cared for by her daughter, Mrs. John Fassett.
The funeral took place at the residence of J.O. Fassett, where a large concourse of friends and old settlers assembeld to pay the last tribute of love and respect to one of the grealy loved and highly esteemed old settlers of this vicinity. John S. Long, of Lynn, Wm. Davis of Cambridge, James G. Davis, Gust Johson, A.P. Swanson and Gustus Bengston acted as pall bearers. A choir composed of John Schoettler and wife of Cambridge, Miss Streed, of Andover, and Eddie Anderson, of Lynn, rendered some excellent singing suitable for the ocassion. She was laid to rest beside father, mother, and husband in the old Presbyterian Cemetery last Sunday afternoon, Rev. C. B. Ludwig, of Cambridge officiating. We are authorized to return thanks to all who so kindly assisted in making this holiday so successful to the memory of the deceased and the bereaved family. Peace to her ashes.

Jonas M. Payne - died 4 May 1848
