He graduated from Frewsburg High School in 1963, Jamestown Community College in 1965 and Roberts Wesleyan College in 1967. In earlier years, he was employed at Automatic Voting Machine and served on the Jamestown City Council until he moved to Tulsa, Okla. He later moved to Paris and London where he managed a computer-related company. Upon his return to the United States, he was serving as president and owner of Advanced Power Systems Inc in Anderson, Ind., which he managed from his home in Naples. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Naples.
He is survived by his wife, Tammie Jo Schuver Smith, whom he married Dec. 24, 1983, in Jamestown; a son Randall Smith of Tulsa; two daughters: Katelyn Smith of Naples and Kristine Eckeren of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren: Matthew and Kailey Smith, both of Tulsa; his father and stepmother, the Rev. and Mrs. Stanley Smith Sr. of Siloam Springs, Ark.; three brothers: Terrance Smith of Louisville, Ky., Dale Smith of San Diego and Kevin Smith of Beijing, China; and three sisters: Sherrie Day of Portland, Ore., Dawn Mead of Springfield, Ill., and Carol Welch of Watkins Glen.
