BEACON FALLS — Kathryn V. Pitzschler, age 64, of Beacon Falls, died on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at St. Vincent's Medical Center from complications resulting from open heart surgery.

Kathy was born in Buffalo, N.Y., but spent what she called her "formative years" in Columbia, Tenn., before graduating from Rumson-Fairhaven High School in Rumson, N.J. She was also a graduate of Bucknell University and Fairfield University. She began her teaching career as a part of the staff that opened Hillcrest Middle School in Trumbull in 1967. During her years as a language arts teacher in Trumbull, she also taught at Madison Middle School and at Trumbull High School.

Kathy was known to her students as a "shoe person," and they would have fun keeping track of how many different pairs she would wear during the year. Her classes also knew that their lives would be easier while in her room if they professed their loyalty to the NY Yankees! While at Hillcrest, she was a Team Leader, a Cooperating Teacher and a mentor. She served on numerous curriculum committees and advisory groups and was chosen as Trumbull's Teacher of the Year in 1998. In addition, she is listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

The activity at Hillcrest that Kathy was most proud of was her advisorship of the National Junior Honor Society. She obtained the charter for the Hillcrest chapter, and under her guidance, the society raised over $110,000 for Swim Across the Sound at St. Vincent's. After her retirement, she was able to call on her language arts skills by becoming a book editor.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Molly and her husband, Jerry Pellegrino; and grandchildren, JR and Chris. Also her brother, William VanDuren and his wife, Judith, and their children, Scott, William and Steve, and grandchildren, Will, Henry and Allison; as well as brother-in-law, John Pitzschler and his wife, Millie, and their children, John and Brian.

Kathy was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Nichols as well as the Phi Mu and Delta Kappa Gamma sororities.

Funeral services will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1734 Huntington Tpke., in the Nichols section of Trumbull, on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ellen Kennedy, Rector, officiating and Deacon Jose Mestre. The family will receive guests immediately following the service in the church hall. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Contributions in Kathy's memory may be made to the Hillcrest Endowment Fund, c/o Swim Across the Sound, St. Vincent's Medical Center, 2800 Main St., Bridgeport 06606. Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Directors, 4 Gorham Place, Trumbull, are in charge of arrangements.

Kathy's family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the many staff members at St. Vincent's Medical Center who were so helpful during these eleven months.
