**My Great Grandmother**

Margaretha Nix was born on October 16, 1844 in Aufenau, Germany, to Heinrich Nix and Elenora Blatt. She married Valentin Kailing on May 26, 1868 in Aufenau, Germany. She entered eternal life on December 13, 1889 in Reed City, Michigan.

Valentin and Margaretha came to America in 1881. They arrived in New York from Germany around May 26, 1881 with five children. For awhile, they lived in Ohio. However, their Catholic religion made it too difficult to stay in this predominantly Protestant area, so they moved to Reed City, Michigan, where Margaret, as she was called, had a younger brother, Philip Nix. Valentin and Margaret arrived in Reed City about May 25, 1882 and settled on a farm on the west side of what is now Patterson Rd, about 2 1/2 miles south of Reed City. Their two-story home sat on a hill overlooking the rolling hills and valley to the east. The first level had a kitchen, dining room and a bedroom; the upstairs had additional bedrooms. There was a cellar accessible from the outside of the house. Valentin said they should have stayed in Ohio as the farm land was better. After arriving in Reed City, they had two more children. Margaret developed breast cancer. After seeing the surgical instruments in the doctor's office, she said she would die at home. She refused to have the necessary operation and died at the age of 45.

Children of Valentin Kailing and Margaretha Nix were:

1. Theodor Kailing (September 9, 1868 - April 30, 1943)

2. Philip Kailing (May 26, 1870 - August 25, 1948) ~my maternal grandfather ~

3. Maria Mary Kailing (June 20, 1871 - date unknown)

4. Emma Kailing (November 12, 1872 - date unknown)

5. Katharina Kailing (March 30, 1878 - date unknown)

6. John Kailing (May 19, 1883 - December 1968)

7. Helena Kailing (June 13, 1885 - date unknown)
