Thomas was a U.S. Deputy Marshall in Norfolk prior to the the War Between the States. He enlisted in Captain Moore's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (formerly known as Captain Frank Huger's Company, Virginia Artillery) in Norfolk on June 5, 1861 at the age of 25. He was mustered in as 1st Lieutenant. He was present or accounted for until paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 1, 1865.

On his interment card at Elmwood cemetery his name is preceded by the word "Captain". Either he was promoted to Captain prior to the end of hostilities or it was an honorary rank in the United Confederate Veterans.
