Thomas R. Greene, Ph.D., 70, formerly of West Chester, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at VA Medical Center, Coatesville.

He was the husband of Eileen M. Cahill Greene.

Born Oct. 17, 1933, in Manhattan, N.Y., he was the son of the late Thomas and Eleanor Holmes Greene.

Mr. Greene attended St. Francis College and then went on to receive his Ph.D. from New York University.

He was a history professor for Villanova University, Villanova.

He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War.

Mr. Greene was the editor of the Journal of the American Catholic Historical Society.

He was on the church council for Ss. Peter & Paul Church. He also was a lector for the church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Dennis, Lawrence and Francis Greene; a daughter, Jeanne Dougherty; three grandsons, Thomas, Brendan and Joseph Dougherty; a granddaughter, Katherine Rose Dougherty; a brother, Kenneth Greene of Igamsville, Md.; and a sister, Barbara Akbanese of Morristown, N.J.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at St. Thomas of Villanova Church-Main Campus Chapel, Villanova.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, at Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike (corner of Hilltop Road), Westtown.

Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 100 N. 17th St., 2nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
