Born to Thomas and Elizabeth Hanson (nee Spencer). James was a hard working agriculture labourer. On October 9, 1848 he married Hannah Duty and together they had over thirteen children. At least eleven of them died in infancy.

Hannah died in 1866 from Cholera. James continued to live in the area of West Butterwick and around 1870 met Ann Simpson. They lived together for twenty years, never marrying.

Buried September 21, 1891. Cause of death was heart disease and dropsy.
