James Sheldon was the 7th child of Benjamin F. Sheldon (1791 - 1870, LaGrange Twp. Cemetery) and Lovisa (Rice) Sheldon (1796 - 1870). Benjamin F. Sheldon was a veteran of the War of 1812 and is Sheldon Family Association S6161 (SFA numbering system). James' siblings were (1) Nelson (b/d infancy 1816 in NY), (2) Sylvina (1817 - abt 1901) m. Bradley B. Woodmansee, (3) George W. (1819 - 1897) m. Jane Lawrence (died in Eaton County, MI), (4) Benjamin (Jr.) (1821 - 1897) m. Lucy C. White, (5) Ann Susan (1824 - 1862) m. Giles P. Ripley (died in Kalamo Twp., Eaton County, MI), and (6) David F. (1829 - 1913) m. Adaline Crandall (died Walton Twp., Eaton County, MI, author's gg-grandparents).

On February 11, 1857, James married Adeline West, daughter of Amasa Hatch West and Maria ______ . James and Adeline gave birth to three children, Jessie (m. Elvin Manning), Lettie (m. Albert Howk), and Charles m. Luella (Crane) Hellman.

James and Adeline were well known in the area for their excellent quality of cheese produced in their Wellington factory (newspaper and other historical accounts).
