OBITUARY
After a long and fulfilling life, Rachel Nielson Melville passed away peacefully on November 28, 2009 at the age of 96.

Rachel was born on September 28, 1913 in Oak City, Utah to John L. Nielson and Rachel Finlinson Nielson, their fourth daughter. Born several months prematurely and weighing approximately 2 pounds, her survival was the first indication of her strong resilience and ability to enjoy and appreciate every day of her life. Her mother died a few weeks after her birth and she was lovingly raised by her paternal grandmother, Florence Virginia Dutson Nielson. Throughout her life, Rachel was extremely devoted to her Millard County roots and developed a love and dedication for her ancestors and relatives of all generations.

Rachel married Donald Jackson Melville of Fillmore, Utah on September 15, 1936 in the Manti Temple. Soon after their marriage they moved to Salt Lake City where they lived, worked, and raised their family. They made many new friends, but always welcomed and looked forward to hosting visiting relatives who came to town. Rachel and Don were married 51 years before he passed away in 1987.

Rachel worked for 27 years as the Administrative Assistant in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah Hospital, retiring at age 72. She loved her association with the Hospital and the many doctors and staff members who were her colleagues. For 15 additional years following her retirement, she volunteered at the Hospital, eager to serve and maintain her connections there. In the meantime, she used vacation time to best advantage and travelled extensively throughout the United Stated and to countries and continents around the world. She chronicled her travels through journals and photo albums which she loved to review and re-live in later years.

Rachel graduated from Delta High School, Snow College and LDS Business College. She served in the LDS Church as a secretary for Primary, Sunday school, and Relief Society. For fifty years, she was a member of Allegro Chorus and loved singing with that group of women. She was never one to sit idly, but preferred to be ‘on the go.' She enjoyed attending local theater and musical performances, as well as University of Utah basketball games. She was a doting and loving grandmother. Each of her grandchildren has special memories of their own individual experiences with Nana. She will be missed!

Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, Don, her older sisters Elma Anderson, Susan Shipley and Florence Lovell and her son-in-law, R.J. Snow. Her younger siblings, Ava Anderson, Alden Nielson and Gayle Nielson of Oak City survive her.

She is also survived by her children: Dale (Sandra) Melville of St. George; Lynn (Linda) Melville of Gilbert, AZ.; Marilyn Snow of Provo; and her 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 So. Redwood Road. Family will greet visitors between the hours of 12:00 and 2:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the University Hospital Foundation (www.uhospitalfoundation.org or 540 Arapeen Drive, Salt Lake City, UT, 84108).
