Husband of Phebe, and father of Caroline Smith (married Hawkins).

Husband of Elizabeth, and father of Maria L. Smith.

In 1870, Nelson Smith, aged 56, was living in Huntington, New York, with his wife, Elizabeth Smith, aged 49, a washerwoman, both born in New York, in the home of Jarvis Rolph, aged 56, a Justice of the Peace, and his wife, Harriet Rolph, aged 51, with Maria L. Smith, aged 12. He was shown to be a farm laborer.

In 1880, Nelson Smith, aged 79, a laborer, was living in Huntington, New York, with his wife, Elizabeth Smith, aged 60, both born in New York.

January 12, 1884 - "The Bulletin, of last week says in this week's Harper's Weekly there is a
picture entitled " Comin' From de Store," drawn by A. B. Frost, of this place. It represents a typical " colored person" returning from the village loaded with Christmas goods. We understand that Mr. Frost took for the subject of this sketch Nelson Smith, at the creek, and on looking at the picture there can be no mistake about it, for Kelson's lineaments are too plainly visible."

Obituary - Nelson Smith (colored) died at his home on the Creek read, near this village, on May 29, very aged, probably 90 years. He has been heard to say he was not sure about his age. Nelson was born at Comac, and the late Edward Bunce's father brought him up to manhood, when he came to Huntington and took charge of the farm belonging to I. W. Roe, who was then an infant, and has always lived here since. Nelson in his younger days was a great runner and dancer, and it was hard to find his match in such sports. Later on he gave up all kinds of worldly spoils and joined the church, and was a consistent follower and believer in the faith, and died respected by all.—[Bulletin.

Also - Few of our prominent citizens will be more missed from Huntington than our aged colored friend, Nelson Smith, who for more than eighty years has walked our streets and who departed
this life on May 27th. Mr. Smith was a steady, industrious gentleman. No one ever saw him drunk or noisy, or making disturbances on the street corners. He was a steady and consistent member of the African M. E. Church of this village. He set a worthy example to many of the young men of this village. We trust they will honor his memory by following in his footsteps through life.

Also - Nelson Smith, a colored man, died at his home near this village at the advanced age of 90 years. He was born at Comac.

Also - Huntington, May 27, Nelson Smith, colored, 81-11-14.
