Ernest "Ernie" Knupp, 74, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Fairfield Township, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at home.
He was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Melcroft, the son of the late Ada Knupp Menzie. He served in the 28th Division, National Guard, and the 5th Army in Signal One Communications at Camp Atterbury, Ind., during the Korean War, and was discharged in 1952.
Prior to his Florida retirement, Ernie was a self-employed building contractor for 26 years in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ariz., and Austin, Texas.
Earlier employment included the Knupp saw mill, Braddock Area coke and Shanks-ville coal mines. While a 20-year member of the Labor and Carpenters unions, he had done construction in the area including the building of Butler and Connellsville high schools.
He enjoyed fishing, traveling, skeet shooting, helping others and spending time with family and friends.
He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Delray Beach, Fla., for the past 18 years.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his son, David L., of Mt. Pleasant; a stepson, Richard D. Shaw, of Arizona; his brother-in-law, Abraham Ruff, of Acme; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Judith King Knupp; his daughter, Sandy Christner, and grandson, James A. Knupp, both of Mt. Pleasant; his granddaughter, Jennifer L. Whipkey, Connellsville; two stepsons, Gregory and Robert Shaw, Arizona;
Also a sister, Anna Menzie Ruff, and nephew, Terry Menzie, of Acme; a niece, Loretta Menzie and family, of Mt. Pleasant; and an aunt, Ethel Whipkey, of Blairsville.
Services were held Tuesday in Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Ray Keefer officiating. Interment was in Snowball Cemetery, Cook Township.
