Ahmed Shah Masoud was born in the Pansjer district of Aghanistan. He was a military commander during the Afghan War against the Soviet Union. After the war his troops entered Kabul to establish a Mujahideen government and he became Defence Minister in the government of President Rabbani. As the Taliban took over the government Masoud and his allies pulled their forces back and tried to defend the north of Afghanistan. Only 2 days before the 9/11 attacks Masoud was killed during an Al Quaeda suicide attack. After the removal of the Taliban president Karzai awarded Masoud the title of " Hero of the Afghan Nation"
