In 1661 became member of both the English and Irish Houses of Commons, in 1662 of the Irish House of Lords. In 1665 he was made lieutenant-general of the army in Ireland. Since 166 he was Lord of the Bedchamber to King Charles II. In 1672 he took part in the war against the Dutch, in the battles of Lowestoft and Solebay, both times with great distinction. The French King Louis XIV tried in vain to induce him to enter the service of France. He was intimate with the Dutch stadtholder, Prince William III, and in 1677 joined the allied army in the Netherlands, commanding the British section.
