The Drowning Accident at Ngawapurua
The man drowned at Ngawapurua was Patrick Carrick, who has been employed at Coonoor for about 12 months, on the co-operative works. The river was not at all too high, but it appears that deceased took the crossing too low down and the horse must have fallen into one of the guts at the tail of the rapid. Deceased had been to Wellington, where he has a wife and family. He was returning to work and was riding an old broken-down horse, which he had borrowed to take him to Coonoor. Mr Vickerstaff saw him enter the ford and signalled to him to keep higher up. He took no further notice for a time and when he looked again he saw the horse struggling and deceased's hat floating down the river. Mr Vickerstaff got Mr Burgess, Mr Bolton and others to assist him but could see nothing of the deceased. Search was immediately afterwards made by Constable Treanor, Mr Campbell and others and the river was dragged, but no further trace of deceased was found. Mr H. R. Holder, kindly sent up his boar, for the use of the search party. On Saturday Messrs McGregor, Thompson and Steggall gave Constable Treanor valuable aid in the search and yesterday Messrs Brougham and Duftill assisted, the search being kept up all day. The members of the Woodville Swimming Club, under Mr Mann, also assisted yesterday, several diving in various parts of the river. The body has not been recovered.
