Catherine was the daughter of Cornelius DeWitt and Catherine Connover, born in Tompkins County, New York. She married Abram Clark about 1857 and removed to California about 1882.

Mrs. Clarke because a member of the Methodist church at an early age and took a keen interest in church activities. She was particularly interested in foreign missionary work and for nearly 15 years was the president of the foreign missionary society connected with the Methodist church in Santa Barbara.
