Tommy Walker

Madison

Surrounded by his family, Carl T. (Tommy) Walker left his earthly home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 23, 2012.

Tommy was born to John and Alice Walker in Memphis, TN on February 10, 1928.

At the age of 5, Tommy, his Mother and Dad and 2 brothers moved to Jackson, MS, where Tommy grew up, attending George Elementary, Enochs Jr. High and Central High School, graduating in 1946. While at Central High, he was very involved in sports, mainly basketball and track. He joined the Navy shortly after graduation.

Upon his return from the Navy, he enrolled at Mississippi College while working part time at the Jackson Boys Club. During this time he met and married Mary Frances Banks on December 25, 1949. He graduated from Mississippi College in May 1952.

Tommy enjoyed a long career with Blue Cross Blue Shield, retiring in 1980. Prior to working at Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tommy was employed at University Hospital. After retiring from Blue Cross, he worked at Hinds General Hospital (CMMC).

Tommy's most beloved pastime was any and everything that his grandchildren participated in. Since two of Tommy's grandsons grew up locally in Madison, he was able to attend and enjoy all of their summer, church and school activities. Tommy also traveled to Katy, TX many times to enjoy his other grandson participate in his sports activities. On many trips to Katy, he also had the joy of seeing his only granddaughter participate in dance recitals. Tommy also loved camping vacations with his family going from Key West, FL to the Rocky Mountains. Tommy also loved anything that had to do with Ole Miss: football, basketball, baseball and the Band.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Lewis Walker.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Banks Walker; sons, David (Susie) Walker and Rip (Wanda) Walker; daughter, Melissa (George) Rhodes; Grandchildren, Wesley Walker, Andrew Walker, Spencer Rhodes and Kristen Rhodes, all of Madison. He is also survived by one brother, Calvin L. Walker of Madison.

Tommy was of the Baptist faith, being a current active member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. He was a founding member and former Chairman of the Deacons at Highland Colony Baptist Church. Before moving to Madison, Tommy and his family attended Hillcrest Baptist Church in Jackson for 29 years.

Funeral services will be 11:00am Monday March 26, 2012 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland, preceded by visitation at 9:30am. Visitation will also be 3-5pm Sunday March 25, 2012 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
