His parents were part of a noteworthy migration, Quakers (Friends Society) who moved from the south, into Ohio, as they did not approve of slavery. They were prohibited by the laws of their old places from stopping slavery. After realisng slavery was sinful, some came to release their own slaves, without fear that the newly freed people would be re-enslaved. An old local history book, published in Chicago in 1900 and with searchable copies preserved at archive.org, speaks of the grandparents of Ezekiel's son, William Calvin Mote (b. 1843). William's biography says Joseph and Mary Mote migrated in 1805, from North Carolina, into Miami County, Ohio, locating in Union Twp, "on the banks of the Stillwater river". They later lived in Darke County's Van Buren township, on what was, in 1900, still called "the old Mote farm". Ezekiel instead stayed in Miami County. (The book said elsewhere that a large group moved out of the South, mentioning the surnames of Hoover and Patty. The migration may have been in "steps", staggered in time, early departers "getting things ready" for later arrivals, most likely, knowing of each other before moving due to their Friends' membership.)
