The son of Jacob & Catherine Bucher, he married Kathryn "Kate" Heltzel and fathered Florence E. (b. @1859 - married a Meckley), William N. (b. @1862), Charles Woodward (b. @1863), Harriet G. (b. @1866), Sarah Ann (b. @1868), John L. (b. @1870), Erma (b. @1873), Horace E. (b. @1875), Earnest V. (b. @1877), and Katherine (b. ?). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 8" tall with sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran (of sorts), he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted November 29, 1862.
