An undercover Houston police officer was killed Tuesday night in a shootout at a Walgreens parking lot. Officer Henry Canales, 42, was shot during a reverse sting operation that was being conducted by HPD's Burglary, Theft and Auto Division around 9:40 p.m. outside the pharmacy at Bellaire and Hillcroft in southwest Houston. Canales was a 16-year veteran with the police force and had spent 12 years in the Tactical Division. During his time with the Tactical Division, Canales was part of a group called "Beat the Heat." The organization tried to get kids to stop street racing. Six years ago, Canales told 11 News he hoped to help kids understand that race tracks were a lot safer than racing on the street. Officer Canales joined the Houston Police Academy Class number 152 on February 1, 1993. During his 16 year career he also served in the Southeast and Northeast Divisions. Officer Canales was also a veteran of the United States Air Force. Officer Canales is preceded in death by his mother Enedina Canales. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years: Amor Canales; daughter: Stephanie Canales; son: Henry Canales Jr.; father: Jesus M. Canales, Sr.; sisters: Rose Marie Reyna and husband Joel, Dolores Wheelis, Lucia Canales and Sandra Canales; brothers: Jesus M. Canales Jr. and wife Rosalinda, Robert Canales and wife Marie and Ruben Canales. Officer Canales is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends and fellow officers. Pallbearers: Sergeant T. Salazar, Sergeant Ramiro G. Lozano, Senior Police Officer Jorge Rincones, Police Officer Tommy J. Carr, Police Officer Rodney D. Storms and Police Officer Robert Douglas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Canales, Nicholas Rodriguez, Joshua Rodriguez, Robert Canales Jr., Daniel Reyna, Nicholas Reyna, Henry Wheelis, Christopher Wheelis, Matthew Marshall, Alex Silvestain, Ricky Canales, Aaron Dietz and Houston Police Department Auto Theft Division.
