Son of John Frederick Philip and Susan Fulton Bittner. In 1860, Francis Frederick Bittner was a cooper living in Larimer Township, Somerset Co. He stood 5'6" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. Fought in the Civil War Co D 87th Pa Inf. He enlisted in Somerset Co. July 21, 1864, as a substitute for William Bittner, and mustered into federal service July 21, 1864. He was wounded in the right arm at the 3rd battle of Winchester (Opequon) crushing one of the bones and permanently bending the arm, rendering it almost useless. He was hospitalized and later discharged by surgeon's certificate June 14, 1865. Died age 22yrs 2mo 22 days.
